• The video/music/photo media you own is yours. Of course, we don’t charge you in any way for that.
• The Plex Media Server is free to use and includes the Plex Web App.
• Our ‘Movies & TV’ streaming service is free to all users and ad-supported.
• Free TV streaming is available from our ad-supported Live TV on Plex service
• Connect a compatible tuner and antenna to your server to let you watch over-the-air broadcasts available at your location live. (Recording of broadcasts requires a Plex Pass subscription.)
• “Podcasts” and “Web Shows” support are free for all users.
• All of our non-mobile, public apps are free. These include Amazon Fire TV, Android TV, Apple TV, Chromecast, Plex Media Player, Roku, Smart TVs, Windows & macOS computers and game consoles (PlayStation and Xbox).
• 30-second previews of songs from TIDAL are available to anyone in the app.
• Our mobile apps (Android and iOS) can be used for free, but have limitations.

Customizing Collections

After creating a collection you will notice the collapsed collection has a poster with up to 4 images from items in that collection. You can edit the collection’s own metadata to add a custom poster, a summary, a background image (fanart), and (for manual collections) choose the sort order for the collection.

1. Open the web app
2. If you do not have collections displayed inline then switch to view by collections
3. Select the edit icon on when hovering on a collection poster or on its preplay screen
4. Make edits as you see fit

Custom Collection Order

The content of regular “dumb” collections can be reordered in any arbitrary way the server admin chooses.

This requires Plex Web App v4.61.2 or newer.

When on the collection details page, the posters of items in the collection will have a drag handle on the top center when hovering over them. Simply drag-and-drop the items to the desired order. This is not available for “smart” collections, which are always ordered by the sort chosen when creating or editing the filter for the smart collection.

Hosted Plex Web App

You can access the Plex Web App from wherever you are by making use of the version hosted on the plex.tv website. To use it:

• Open a browser window
• Visit https://app.plex.tv/desktop

or:

• Sign in to your account on the plex.tv website
• Click the large orange Launch button at the top right:

When you do so, the web application will be loaded from the plex.tv website. It runs in your local browser and accesses content from the local browser.

Tip!: When using the hosted Plex Web App, your connection does not go “through” the plex.tv website. Communication happens between the browser and Plex Media Server directly.

In order to be able to access and manage your content when away from home, you’ll need to ensure that you’ve successfully enabled Remote Access for your server.

Preparation

Before You Begin

Before you begin installing Plex Media Server, it’s strongly recommended that you check that your media collection has been named and organized in a way that Plex will understand. If not, you may notice content isn’t recognized, is mis-matched, or not found at all.

You may already be naming and organizing your media files in a way suitable for Plex. Here are the important things:

• Movies are gathered together in a “Movies” type folder, TV Shows in a “TV Shows” type folder, etc.

• Movies are named as follows:

• TV Show episodes are named with the season and episode:

• TV Show episodes are stored in their own folder as follows:

• For TV shows, the folder structure can be very important. Make sure you have show folders that contain season folders that contain the episodes

Tip!: It’s important to understand that Plex Media Server does not have its own graphical user interface. When you run the server on your computer, NAS, or other device, you won’t see a window open with a “server UI” or similar. Instead, you use the Plex Web App to manage your server.

Download the Installer

The Plex Media Server can be downloaded for free from the Plex Downloads page. There are many platforms available:

Get a Plex (Player) App

While you’re on the Downloads page, you may wish to download a player app as well. The server includes the browser-based Plex Web App, but you’ll probably want to download an app for other devices. There are many available:

• Windows/macOS Desktop PCs: Plex for Windows, Plex for macOS, or Plex Media Player (primarily intended for HTPC usage)
• Mobile Devices: Android, iOS
• Connected Devices: Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Android TV, Roku, Smart TVs, game consoles, and more

Server Installation

The server is available for many different platforms. Installation is always via an installation package and follows the platform’s usual installation method. For NAS devices, you should follow the manufacturer’s add-on installation procedure.

Note: You’ll need to be sure to run your Plex Media Server on a filesystem that allows symlinks/hardlinks. For the vast majority of users, this isn’t an issue. If you’re running on an unusual filesystem (such as a drive pool or similar), then you should check for support.

Windows

• Download the Windows Installer .exe file
• Run the installer
• Follow the usual installation method
• At the final screen, click the Launch button. If you don’t select this, launch the Server from the Start button

The Plex Media Server will launch and display an icon to the System Tray (bottom right of the screen) To setup the Plex Media Server, choose Open Plex… from the Plex icon in the system tray.

macOS

• Download the Plex Media Server .zip
• Unzip the file
• Drag the Plex Media Server app to the Applications folder
• Launch the Plex Media Server from the Applications folder

To setup Plex Media Server from the server computer, launch the Open Plex… from the “>” icon in your Mac’s menubar.

Linux

Below, you’ll find information on installing Plex Media Server for our supported Linux distributions. Once installation is complete, you can also choose to enable updating via repository.

Opening the Plex Web App on a Device Other than the Server Itself

On the Same Local Network

To open the Plex Web App from a different device than the server computer while still on the same network:

1. Open a browser window
2. Type into the address bar (e.g “http://192.168.1.5:32400/web”)
3. The browser will connect to the server and load Plex Web App

On a Different Network

If you’re on a different network than the server computer, you’ll first need to set up a SSH tunnel so that you can access things as if they were local. This is only necessary for the initial setup. After initial setup, you should be able to access by using the network IP address as normal.

OS X or Linux

1. Open a Terminal window or your command prompt

2. Enter the following command (substituting the IP address of your server as appropriate):

4. Type into the address bar
5. The browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

Windows

If you’re using Windows on your local system and your server is on Linux or OS X, you’ll need to use an application such as Putty that can create the SSH tunnel for you. You can use instructions like these for setting up the Putty/SSH connection. If following that, you would use this information:

• Gateway: ip.address.of.server
• Source Port: 8888
• Destination: localhost:32400

Once you have the SSH tunnel set up:

1. Open a browser window
2. Type into the address bar
3. The browser will connect to the Server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

If your server is running Windows, then you could do a standard Remote Desktop session or similar.

1. Setting Up and Installing the Plex Media Server

Choosing a Server—the Server Requirements

Plex Media Server can run on Windows, Mac, or Linux computers—some people use their every-day computer, others have a dedicated computer. It can also be installed on a compatible network attached storage (NAS) device. Generally, Plex works just fine on most modern computers.

Plex Media Server Performance Considerations

There are two really important considerations with regards to performance.

First, the Plex Media Server can allow multiple people to view content at the same time. Say everyone in your home views media on Plex at the same time, particularly video—the server has to work harder. So, the more people you expect to view media at the same time, the more powerful the server needs to be. Second, when Plex prepares your files for certain devices or for the available bandwidth, we convert (or “transcode”) the content on-the-fly. This also takes a lot of server resources when it happens, but allows you to watch all your content, no matter how big, on all your devices, no matter how small.

If your server isn’t powerful enough for how you use it, you will notice playback issues such as stuttering, buffering, or sometimes even an inability to play at all. If this happens, it usually means the CPU can’t keep up with the number of users or the amount of transcoding or both. So, you might consider upgrading your hardware. It may also mean that your hardware is fine but your network is too slow.

Downloading the Plex Media Server

Once you’ve decided where you are going to install the Plex Media Server, visit the Plex Downloads page and download the Server for your device. It is important to ensure the Server computer has an internet connection while installing. This way, the setup wizard can run correctly and you can set up an account during the process.

Installing and Running the Plex Media Server

The installation process should be very familiar, since it’s what you normally do on your computer—it is a normal installation program on Windows and you move the downloaded app to your “Applications” folder for OS X.

When the install is finished or when the server is run for the first time, a browser will launch and ask you to either sign in or create a new account on the plex.tv website. You will then be asked to accept the terms of service, and the Setup Wizard will start.

Tip!: It’s important to understand that Plex Media Server does not have its own graphical user interface. When you run the server on your computer, NAS, or other device, you won’t see a window open with a “server UI” or similar. Instead, you use Plex Web App to manage your server.

Desktop Computer

Running Plex Media Server on a desktop computer is a very popular option. This allows you to choose your operating system and you have flexibility in your computer components.

Operating System

You can run Plex Media Server on a desktop computer running a number of operating systems.

Tip!: You’ll generally want to ensure that you’ve installed all “critical” type updates or service packs for your current operating system.

Windows

When running on Windows, the following operating system versions are supported:

• Windows 7 SP1 / Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1
• Windows 8 / Windows Server 2012
• Windows 8.1 (with Update) / Windows Server 2012 R2 (with Update)
• Windows 10

Linux

We have official Plex Media Server releases available for the following Linux Distributions:

• CentOS 7 or newer
• Debian 8 or newer
• Fedora 27 or newer
• SUSE 15 or newer
• Ubuntu 16.04 or newer

FreeBSD

Plex Media Server releases are available for FreeBSD 11.2 or newer.

Note: If running in a FreeBSD “jail”, you’ll want to make sure that VNET is enabled. (For instance, FreeNAS has instructions.)

CPU

CPU requirements can vary dramatically, depending on how exactly you want to use Plex, which particular Plex apps you’ll be using, properties of your media, how many people will be using Plex at the same time, and more.

As a minimum, we recommend:

Intel Core i3 (or equivalent) or faster

Note: While Plex Media Server can install and run on a computer with a slower processor, you might not have a very good experience, depending on your usage.

Generally, any modern computer should meet that minimum. However, if you will have multiple people accessing content simultaneously and you’ll sometimes require transcoding of content during playback, then you may well need something faster than the minimum.

If your computer’s CPU is not powerful enough to keep up with transcoding your media, you will notice pausing or buffering as the app waits for the server to catch up. We have additional information to help you figure out what kind of processor you might need for your own particular usage.

In general, Plex Media Server doesn’t require large amounts of RAM. 2GB of RAM is typically more than sufficient and some installs (particularly Linux-based installs) can often happily run with even less. Of course, more RAM won’t hurt you and will certainly be helpful if you’re also doing other things on the computer.

Consequences of Being in a Plex Home

When you create a Plex Home, there are certain things you should be aware of that may be important to you.

• There is a single admin for the Plex Home; this is the user that created the Home originally.
• When switching to another member, you have all of the access and abilities of that user.
• Some changes will be made on the Server:
  • Any App, device, or tool communicating with your Server will need to be signed in to a Plex Account.
  • The DLNA server will be disabled by default.
• You need an active internet connection to be able to do Fast User Switching between members of a Plex Home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where did all these extra collections come from? I didn’t add them.

There are three ways “automatic” collections can be made.

1. You may have enabled the Use collection info from The Movie Database metadata agent setting (for legacy agents). When enabled (it is disabled by default), that will try to gather collection information from The Movie Database. This may cause many unwanted collections to be automatically created, particularly collections where you only have one item. You can disable that preference in the server metadata agent settings for the “Plex Movie (Legacy)” and “The Movie Database” metadata agents. This will only prevent collections from getting automatically added to items added to your library in the future. It will not remove collections from existing library items.
2. When using the current “Plex Movie” scanner/agent combo, you’ve set the Minimum automatic collection size preference for a library. You can set it to Disabled if you do not want it to automatically create collections. Again, the change only applies to future added items or metadata refreshes.
3. If you have MP4s with an embedded “Album” tag, the Local Media Assets agent may pick it up as a collection. Note that the Local Media agent also picks up external subtitles, extras, and other embedded metadata in MP4s (and other files), so be aware of this if you choose to disable the agent source.

Why are there collections with zero items?

You will find after removing all the collection tags from items, the collapsed collection itself remains, but with zero items in it. These are kept because you might have made customizations to the collection (artwork, a description, etc.). We don’t want automatically remove the collection, in case you were only temporarily emptying it before you add other items to it.

If you want to get rid of an empty collection, delete the collection as described above.

Can I make a photo or music collection?

Collection tags cannot be added to photos.

You can add music artists or albums to a collection. You’ll be able to filter by the collection as normal, but there are no “collection details page” screens in music libraries, nor will they appear “collapsed” inline when browsing the music library.

If you add an artist or album to a collection with the same name as a collection in a movie or TV library, the artist or album collection can appear as a related item in that movie or TV library collection preplay, as described earlier.

Creating a Manual Collection

You can manually create a collection by adding a Collections tag to an item. Add other items to a collection by giving them the same collection tag. You do this from the library item’s Edit Details screen. To do this:

• Open the Edit details screen for the item
• Navigate to the Tags tab on the left
• Click the Collections box
• If the collection already exists, choose it from the list
• If not, type the name and hit enter
• Save the changes

You can also add individual items to a collection by selecting individual items, or a the results of a filter, then from the Add To menu select Add to Collection and choose an existing collection, or create a new one.
