Plex Media Server Setup

Screenshot Guide

After determining whether to purchase Plex Pass or use the free version, we can sign up for service and install the Plex Media Server.

Read the requirements above if you are unsure of what to use as a Home Server for Plex.

Before installing the Home Media Server, we must register for Plex Service.

If you don’t already have a Plex account you can create one, or log in.

1. Visit plex.tv and choose Sign In (or Sign Up if you are a new user)

2. Sign in using one of the methods below

3. After signing in or signing up, choose My Account in the upper right-hand corner

4. Click Downloads

5. Choose the Media Server for your device and click Download

6. When prompted, click Install

7. Wait for Plex Media Server to install

8. After download finishes your device will need to restart. Click Restart

9. After restarting, we can launch Plex Media Server

10. Choose Got it!

11. Name your Home Media Server and click Next (Make sure to check the box next to “Allow me to access my media outside my home”)

12. Click Next again

13. Click Done

14. You will now encounter the home-screen of Plex Media Server. Click Settings (tool icon) in the upper right-hand corner

15. Choose Remote Access from menu side-bar and make sure your Server is accessible outside your network

16. Click Libraries under Manage and select Add Library

17. Here we can add files from our previously created Media Folder. Click Movies (or other media you wish to add)

18. Click Next

19. Choose Browse for Media Folder

20. Locate your saved folder with content and click Add

21. Find your Movies folder and click Add again

22. Your Movies should populate into the proper Library

23. You can now add other media using the same process. Here, we input an Album

That’s it! You can add as much media as you wish to your server including Movies, TV Shows, Music, Photos and more.

Once your server has been set up you can now access it via apps on your favorite devices.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The Plex Media Server runs within your Web Browser and is not a stand-alone application. This means that launching Plex on your home server will open Plex within your preferred Browser.

If you are unable to launch the Plex Server, you can go to https://app.plex.tv/desktop

General Troubleshooting

Here are some general troubleshooting steps you can take:

  • Ensure you have the current version of Plex Media Server installed
  • Ensure that Plex Media Server is actually actively running
  • Verify that your Server is listed on your page
  • Disable any VPN on your computer or router
  • Disable any proxies being used on your computer or router
  • Make sure you aren’t requiring secure connections on the server while using an app that doesn’t support them (see below)

Once you’ve checked those:

  1. Sign out of your Plex account in both the app and Plex Media Server
  2. in the Server
  3. Then sign into your account in the Plex app

Depending on whether your app is local or remote to the Server, there are also other things to check. If you continue to have an issue, then posting details in our support forums will be the best resource for you. See the Related Page information for additional information you can gather.

App and Server Are on the Same Network

When both your Plex app and Plex Media Server are on the same local network:

Make sure both the Server and app are on the same subnet of the network

Tip!: Make sure the subnet mask (netmask) is set correctly, so that the devices are actually treated as being on the same subnet.

App Is Remote from the Server

If your app is not on the same network as your Plex Media Server:

Ensure that Remote Access has been successfully enabled for the Server

Can’t Access Server Settings

In some cases, you may find that the Server entry doesn’t appear for you under Settings in the web app and thus you can’t try to sign in to the Server. This often occurs when you’re not yet signed in on the Server and you’re using the hosted Plex Web App.

  1. Load the “” on your Server computer using or , for instance
  2.  to the Plex Web App
  3. Access the Server settings and sign in to the Server

Once you’ve done that, your Plex Media Server should appear when using the hosted Plex Web App, too.

Using a Third-Party App That Cannot Sign In

Starting with version 1.1.0 of Plex Media Server, security improvements were made to help protect users. Basically, if you are signed in to Plex Media Server, then apps accessing the server must also be signed in.

In rare cases, you may have an old, deprecated app that does not support signing in such as LG’s “Media Link” or “Smart Share” apps. To allow such apps to access your Plex Media Server, you will need to make a specific exception for them.

  1. Find out the local IP address of the device on which the app is running. You will typically be able to find this in the device’s system settings.
  2. In your Plex Web App, go to Settings > Server > Network.
  3. Enter the IP address from step one into the List of IP addresses and networks that are allowed without auth setting and save.

Plex

Opening the Plex Web App on a Device Other than the Server Itself

On the Same Local Network

To open Plex Web App from a different device than the server computer while still on the same network:

  1. Open a browser window
  2. Type into the address bar (e.g “http://192.168.1.5:32400/web”)
  3. The browser will connect to the server and load Plex Web App

On a Different Network

If you’re on a different network than the server computer (or the entire “local network” is not in the private network IP ranges), you’ll first need to set up a SSH tunnel so that you can access things as if they were local.

Tip!: This is only necessary for the initial setup. Once you’ve gone through the setup, you can access as normal.

macOS or Linux

  1. Open a Terminal window or your command prompt
  2. Enter the following command (substituting the IP address of your server as appropriate):
  3. Open a browser window
  4. Type into the address bar
  5. The browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

Windows

If you’re using Windows on your local system and your server is on Linux or macOS, you’ll need to use an application such as Putty or Windows 10’s built-in SSH client that can create the SSH tunnel for you. You can use instructions like these for setting up the Putty/SSH connection. If following that, you would use this information:

  • Gateway: ip.address.of.server
  • Source Port: 8888
  • Destination: localhost:32400

Once you have the SSH tunnel set up:

  1. Open a browser window
  2. Type into the address bar
  3. The browser will connect to the server as if it were local and load Plex Web App

If your server is running Windows, then you could do a standard Remote Desktop session or similar.

Setting Up Libraries and Adding Media

When the asks you to set up libraries, it means you are organizing your media collections for Plex. As we mentioned earlier in this article, there are five types of libraries you can set up for your media (movies, TV shows, music, photos, and home videos) and Plex uses your file and folder data to match content and then gather awesome metadata for it. For files you have ripped or purchased (without digital rights management)—like movies, TV shows, or music—the metadata, filenames, and folders are usually organized well enough for Plex to enhance correctly, without any issues or need to correct. There are also ways to correct any issues, and they are outlined in the media preparation guide.

We suggest, at this point, that you prepare a test folder for each media type, add libraries, and see how it looks in Plex. Try some movies, TV shows, home videos, music, and photos. You can always go back and update the library, delete it, recreate libraries, or start over with a new library.

This test will give you a sense for the organization and labeling you want. Then, you can decide how you want your libraries grouped and named. For example, you may want to go ahead and add well organized folders to various libraries right away, and then put a bunch of unorganized files and folders into another library—these might be named “Summer Beach Trip 2014 Photos” and “Unorganized 2014 Photos.”

Note: Video content purchased from online stores such as iTunes, Google Play, or Amazon will typically be protected by DRM (digital rights management) and cannot legally be played in other systems such as Plex.

Transfer an Existing TIDAL Subscription to Plex

Users who already have an existing subscription directly through TIDAL (not through a different partner) have the option of transferring their subscription so that it is billed and managed through Plex, instead of through TIDAL itself. There are benefits to doing so:

  • For users who do not currently have a Plex Pass subscription, transferring an existing TIDAL subscription to us will provide the same benefits as if you had started the TIDAL subscription through us ().
  • If you already have an active Plex Pass subscription, then transferring will give you the TIDAL subscription at a discounted rate, in most cases (again, ).

If you would like to transfer an existing TIDAL subscription to be billed and managed through Plex:

  1. Visit our TIDAL transfer page
  2. Choose the plan that corresponds to the one you already have directly through TIDAL
  3. When you get redirected to the TIDAL site, sign in with your TIDAL account that has the existing subscription; it will then switch your subscription to be managed through Plex instead

Once you do that, you’ll need to manage your subscription through us (see below) and you’ll be billed through us, rather than through TIDAL itself.

Note: We do not have access to information about existing, in-progress trials from TIDAL, so if your TIDAL account currently has an extended trial offer, you may lose some trial time when transferring. Discounted subscriptions (e.g. a student or military rate) would use our regular subscription rates, if you transfer over.

Tip!: If you already have a Plex Pass subscription and transfer over a TIDAL HiFi plan, it does not “replace” your existing Plex Pass subscription. You maintain your current Plex Pass subscription and then have a second, TIDAL subscription (usually at a discounted rate, compared to what it was through TIDAL itself).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TIDAL free to all Plex users?

No. Access to TIDAL requires a subscription to the TIDAL service, which can be purchased through Plex (or elsewhere, though you won’t necessarily enjoy some of the Plex benefits if you purchase elsewhere). It is not a free service. You can start a free TIDAL trial to try things out.

How do I start a TIDAL subscription with Plex?

To start a new TIDAL subscription on a free Plex account (or to add one to a Plex account that already has a Plex Pass subscription), you can visit our main TIDAL page. As part of the sign up process, you’ll get redirected to the TIDAL site to create an account there and confirm that you want to link/authorize Plex.

Related Page: TIDAL on Plex

Do I need a Plex Pass subscription?

A Plex Pass subscription is not required to use TIDAL.

If you do already have a Plex Pass subscription, then you’ll automatically get a discount on the TIDAL subscription for being a Plex Pass subscriber, when signing up through us.

Related Page:

What countries are supported?

TIDAL is currently available in over 50 countries (and growing!). We support the same countries.

Related Page: TIDAL – Where we’re available

Do I need a Plex Media Server to use TIDAL?

Nope! If you have a TIDAL subscription linked to your Plex account, you can access TIDAL content in a supported app, regardless of whether you have your own Plex Media Server or not.

However, if you do run your own server and have a music library, then you’ll enjoy extra integration with TIDAL such as albums for an artist that are available on TIDAL, but missing from your library.

If I link/add a TIDAL subscription to my account, is it shared with other users?

Having a TIDAL subscription linked to a Plex account is a 1:1 relationship. The Plex account to which it is linked will have access to TIDAL content. Shared accounts (including Plex Home members) will not have access to TIDAL.

If you already have a “Family Premium” or “Family HiFi” TIDAL plan through TIDAL, you can link to a different Plex account for each of the available TIDAL members. (See information on how to link to an existing subscription in our article.)

Related Page:

How many apps can stream from TIDAL at the same time?

As with subscriptions through TIDAL itself, you can use a single device/app to stream from TIDAL at any one time. If you’re already streaming some TIDAL music on your Plex for Android mobile app, for instance, you won’t be able to also stream TIDAL content on your Apple TV’s Plex app at the same time.

Related Page: TIDAL: How many devices can I use simultaneously?

Are TIDAL subscriptions through Plex the same as elsewhere?

A TIDAL subscription through Plex will be identical to one purchased elsewhere (such as through TIDAL itself). However, there are a few TIDAL features that are only available when using official TIDAL apps (or the TIDAL website) and are not available through partners’ apps, such as Plex.

  • While the HiFi plan does have access to lossless quality music in Plex, it does not have access to “master-quality” (MQA) music when played through Plex.
  • You cannot download TIDAL music to Plex mobile apps for TIDAL’s “Offline Mode”. (This also applies to our own Mobile Sync feature; it is not possible to sync TIDAL content.)
  • You cannot purchase music from TIDAL through Plex.

All of these features are available when using supported official TIDAL apps directly, but not when accessing TIDAL through partner apps, such as our Plex apps.

Can I use Mobile Sync with TIDAL content?

The ability to download TIDAL music is not available to partners such as Plex. That means that it is not possible to download/sync TIDAL content using our Mobile Sync feature, sorry.

How do I migrate to TIDAL if I already use ?

If you already use another streaming music service, then chances are that you have lots of playlists and favorites that you wouldn’t want to lose. Luckily, you can use a service like Soundiiz to transfer that music data from your old streaming music service to TIDAL!

Plex Subscription

Most Plex users find the Plex Free Service is adequate for their media and streaming needs.

The Free Version of Plex will provide you with the following features:

  • Unlimited use of Media Server
  • Movie and TV Streaming App
  • News Podcasts, and Web Shows Support
  • All non-mobile Client apps (and mobile apps with some restrictions)
  • TIDAL 30-second song previews

However, Plex also offers a premium subscription called Plex Pass with some advanced benefits.

Plex Pass

For those who want a more in-depth experience, you may want to consider purchasing a Plex Pass subscription.

The Plex Pass is available in 3 packages including monthly, yearly, and lifetime:

Plex Pass subscribers get everything included in the free Plex package but with some additional features.

This includes:

  • Full mobile app use
  • Stream trailers and extras
  • Set up Plex Home with the ability to switch between accounts and restrict access
  • Early Preview access to new apps and features

The biggest component provided with the Plex Pass is the ability to use the full functionality of the mobile app.

Free users are not able to transmit content within their Plex Server to the mobile app. That means if you want to view content on your mobile phone from your home server, you must have the Plex Pass.

This is perfect for those who travel frequently or want to view their home media on the go.

Plex Live TV & DVR

For those who want to get more out of Plex, the Live TV & DVR feature works great to record shows OTA (Over the Air).

This will require a Plex Pass as well as a DVR Tuner and an OTA Antenna.

You can check out a complete list of Plex supported Tuners using the link below:

Most OTA Antennas are compatible with Plex and work well with any of the tuners listed above. Both Indoor and Outdoor antennas will work with the Plex DVR system.

While the Plex Pass adds some beneficial extras to your streaming experience, most will find the free version of Plex is adequate for their needs.

Server Installation

The server is available for many different platforms. Installation is always via an installation package and follows the platform’s usual installation method. For NAS devices, you should follow the manufacturer’s add-on installation procedure.

Note: You’ll need to be sure to run your Plex Media Server on a filesystem that allows symlinks/hardlinks. For the vast majority of users, this isn’t an issue. If you’re running on an unusual filesystem (such as a drive pool or similar), then you should check for support.

Windows

  • Download the Windows Installer .exe file
  • Run the installer
  • Follow the usual installation method
  • At the final screen, click the Launch button. If you don’t select this, launch the Server from the Start button

The Plex Media Server will launch and display an icon to the System Tray (bottom right of the screen) To setup the Plex Media Server, choose Open Plex… from the Plex icon in the system tray.

macOS

Installing the Plex Kodi addon

Since the Plex Kodi addon is part of the main Kodi repository, it’s pretty easy to get the addon installed as long as you know where to look. Here’s how I did it.

Start by opening Kodi and browsing to the Addons menu in the main screen. It will be at the bottom of the list on the left by default.

Next click the Download menu item.

Then scroll down and click the Video addons menu item to open the addons browser.

Scroll through the list of available video addons until you find the Plex menu item, and click it to open the install screen.

Next, click the Install button in the lower-right corner.

Now you’ll be taken back to the addon browser, and the Plex icon will change to show that the installation process has begun.

Then the Plex icon will change to a check when the installation has completed. When you’re finished, exit the addon browser and return to Kodi’s main screen in order to launch the Plex Kodi addon.

Now you can launch the Plex Kodi addon from the Addons menu.

Plex

Plex.
